What the heck is a lupini bean?
Our hero ingredient, the small-but-mighty Lupini bean, is a high-fiber legume that has 2x more protein than chickpeas and 3x more protein than eggs. Human beings have been eating Lupini beans throughout history. 2,000 years ago during the era of Augustus, Lupini were a common food throughout the Roman Empire and considered “a dish of the poor” due to their low price. Scientists have even recovered Lupini beans from the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs (which date back some 4,200 years). Today, Lupini beans are under widespread cultivation in Australia, Europe, Russia, and the Americas.
What are all the lupini health benefits?
Packed with protein:
Lupini has about 3 times as much protein as quinoa. A study also showed that the protein in lupini is highly bioavailable.
The study found that the human body utilizes lupini protein at about 80% the rate of egg protein.
Because lupini is so high in fiber and protein, it is an optimal food to keep you full and fueled at the same time. The fiber/protein combination is what makes it truly powerful as the fiber helps to improve gut health and acts as a pre-biotic.
Excellent amino acid profile:
Lupini is a complete protein, similar to meat or soy. This means it has a full chain of 9 amino acids: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine.
May help prevent cardiovascular disease and diabetes:
Dr Regina Belski performed a study on lupini beans with a group of 131 adults with the goal to see how lupini enriched foods influencer people’s health. At the end of 12 months, despite similar weight loss in both groups, the group eating lupin flour foods had significantly larger improvements in a number of key risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The results of this study were published in the International Journal of Obesity in 2011.
Low glycemic impact:
Because of it’s high amount of fiber and low amount of carbohydrates, lupini helps regulate blood sugar levels. About 40% of calories in lupini beans come from carbs, compared to 78% in pinto beans or 67% in chickpeas
Forget about bananas, lupini beans have 3 times as much potassium. Why invest in your potassium intake? Potassium helps regulate muscle contractions and nerve signals!
Low in fat:
Unlike other legumes (such as soy), the lupini has almost zero calories from fat, which makes it a truly unique bean.

What is my Lupii packaging made of?
Our boxes are made out of recyclable cardboard, and our wrappers are made out of plastic #5. Some communities will recycle #5 and some will not. We realize our packaging isn’t perfect, and we’re hard at work researching the most sustainable options for our little bites. In the meantime, look out for zero waste boxes at your workplace/school (or request to house a receptacle!)
What is whole-plant-based protein?
While most protein bars use isolates and powders, Lupii uses the entire Lupini bean. That means no processing, no added flavors, and no added sugar– just feel-good fuel for you! We believe that human bodies are designed to consume macronutrients in their whole form (not isolated macronutrients). Our protein comes from the whole bean, which means it also contains all the fiber, mineral and vitamins that your body needs to be healthy! Even more awesome? Lupini beans are a complete protein. That means they contain all nine essential amino acids. Incomplete proteins are missing one or more so your body needs to find the missing ones from other foods.
Why are dates “good carbs”?
Here at Lupii, we love dates (lunch dates, coffee dates, & scrumptious Medjools). Medjool dates are high in fiber and have a low glycemic load—which means that, when eaten in moderation, they have a mild impact on blood sugar levels. Even better? Dates are the richest source of dietary minerals– we’re talkin’ potassium, magnesium, iron, Vitamin B6, and so much more!
What’s up with all this fiber?
Lupii is incredibly high in fiber– 2x that of your average bar. Fiber helps clean out bacteria in your intestines, reducing your risk of colon cancer. Fiber is also incredibly good for your heart! That’s right! A high-fiber diet can improve your cholesterol and help prevent diseases like diabetes. Are lupini beans potential allergen?
A small number of people with peanut allergies may cross-react to Lupii because the lupini bean and peanut are both part of the legume family.
